Investigative journalism has had significant impact on social change. students will first learn the history of investigative journalism. Ida Tarbell’s piece on Standard Oil helped dissolve its monopolistic practices. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate story, which led to the indictment of 40 administration officials and the resignation of President Nixon.
In this class, students will first learn about the methods of investigative journalism. Then, students will engage in a course-long research/investigative piece about their local community. As part of this assessment, students will meet benchmarks each week, building on previous assignments to create a final investigation report, to be compiled and published by NYC STEM Club as its first student-led investigative journal.
